Stories of Recovery

Overview - What is this podcast and who is it for?

Robbie Frawley

A short overview episode to introduce the podcast, explain what it is all about, and who it is for.

This initial five-part series (to be released weekly from November 20th) tells the stories of a young farmer involved in a farm motorcycle accident, a triple Olympian’s unexpected stroke on the operating table, an electrician’s long deterioration from a workplace (back) injury, a young professional’s exposure to too many concussions, and a newspaper editors emotional rollercoaster following the effects of a misfiring shotgun.

These are their stories, focussed on the tangible actions that helped them to regain their health. Content covers treatments, methodologies, resources, attitudes, practices and current brain science. Let us stand on the shoulders of those who’ve walked before us.

Transcript and show notes are available for each episode on the podcast website: storiesofrecovery.buzzsprout.com

Robbie - Host:

My name is Robbie Frawley, and I'd like to warmly welcome you to this podcast- Stories of Recovery. In this podcast, I'm going to be interviewing people who have experienced and recovered from brain-related conditions, such as stroke, concussion, chronic pain, and traumatic brain injury. We'll discuss their story and highlight the things which have been most beneficial and most important in their recovery. This might be specific treatments or medical professionals that were most crucial. It could be books, knowledge, or advice which they were given or which they found along the way, or even particular habits, attitudes, or practices that helped them the most. If you or someone you care about is struggling to recover from one of these or another brain related condition, this podcast was really made with you in mind. Know that others have been where you are now, and that they have gotten better. You CAN recover and hopefully in the interviews that follow you'll hear a thing or two which resonate and which help you to do just that. Personally, growing up playing a lot of sport in the country I received a number of concussions. These were never a problem until the last one developed into something called post-concussion syndrome. I'd never heard of it, but it left me with ongoing fatigue, headaches, nausea, vertigo, cognitive fog, overwhelm, and sensitivity to impact. It had a dramatic effect on my life, and it took many years, much effort and great assistance from others around me to fully recover from it. I remember during my recovery I was desperate to speak to someone who had been through this and had come out the other end. That proved a very difficult thing to do at the time however. So now that I'm back at 100% and again have some surplus energy, I've developed this podcast to do just that, to find, speak to and record the stories of others who've been through these things before us to share their learnings, their insights, and their tips and tricks with you. Now, the trickiest thing about this podcast will be ensuring that it reaches the people who need it the most. Those who are still struggling and battling to recover their health, to recover from brain related conditions, such as stroke post-concussion syndrome, chronic or persistent pain, vestibular issues, blast injuries, or traumatic brain injury. If you are listening to this podcast and you know of anyone who has experienced one of these conditions, please share this podcast with them. You probably won't really know how much they're suffering until years down the track. And hopefully they'll thank you for it. Also, if you found your way here, I'd really encourage you to listen to the stories of other conditions, too. For instance if you're suffering from persistent pain, I'd really recommend that you listen to the interviews about concussion and stroke, etcetera. Personally this was crucial in my own recovery and you'll find there's a huge amount of overlap and a lot to learn from each other's stories in this space. And finally, I'd just like to say, I wish you courage and energy on your own journey forward. Thanks very much.
